40,000 seized bags of rice shared to IDP camps


The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized over 40,000 bags of rice in recent times.

The bags were shared among Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps.

This was revealed by Deputy Comptroller-General of the NCS, Mr Umar Ilya.

Umar Ilya at a joint media briefing with Acting Director General of NAFDAC Mrs Yetunde Oni on the suspected seized plastic rice.

His words: “We have seized over 40,000 bags of rice since the ban on importation of rice through the border.

“Those are rice shared to the IDP camps after we tested and certified them suitable for consumption.”
At the briefing, the two agencies put to rest the alleged report of importation of plastic rice into the country.

Laboratory result released by NAFDAC showed the rice was not plastic as suspected.
The minister of health, Professor Isaac Adewole had debunked the report when it made the rounds after, assuring Nigerians there was no cause for alarm.

Last week, the NCS intercepted 102 bags of rice in the Ikeja area of Lagos, which smugglers were planning to sell in Nigerian markets.

MASSOB begs Buhari to allow Biafra go


The Cross River State chapter of (MASSOB) has appealed to President Buhari to allow them leave the country.

They alleged that living conditions in the country has become unbearable.
They also insisted that there is much injustice in Nigeria.

Biafra, (MASSOB) have appealed to the president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari to allow Biafra leave Nigeria”, Daily Trust reports.

The Cross River State chapter of
(MASSOB) made this appeal recently.

They urged the president to ‘free’ them to go on their own In a statement from the Public Relations
Officer, Comrade Okon Eyo Effiom, Biafra people in the country are finding it difficult to comfortably live in the Nigeria. He claimed that they can no longer afford basic amenities, hence, the reason for his pleas.

According to him, the injustice in
Nigeria can no longer be tolerated.
He said: “Many years after the Nigerian civil war, injustice is still being perpetrated against the people of Biafra especially the minorities as seen with the devastation of Odi in Rivers State, the handing over of Bakassi to Cameroon by the Nigerian government.

“ We hereby call on President
Mohammadu Buhari to let the people of Biafra go so that we can decide our fate and build our nation"

Comrade Effiom noted that with the
present situation of things in the
country, the Nigerian government can no longer cater adequately for her people.

Meanwhile, MASSOB has urged the
United States President elect Donald
Trump to save the people of Biafra, who are at the risk of extermination under the hammer of the Nigerian government.

Many feared dead as Boko Haram launches surprise attack against army


Nigerian troops on Operation Lafiya Dole engaged Boko Haram terrorists in an early- morning gun fire leader to the death of about 15 terrorists.

According to Premium Times, the gun fire started around 6 am on Friday, December 30 in Borno state and ended by 9 am.

It was reported that the terrorists
launched a surprise attack against
troops Rann, in northern Borno where
soldiers from 3 Battalion and 112 Task Force Battalion are stationed.

The soldiers responded promptly ant
attacked the terrorists who were firing sporadically.
At the end of the gun fire, about 15
terrorists were killed while some were injured.

Another source in the military said the number of terrorists that died was more than 15 as some of them escaped with gunshot wounds.

It was however confirmed that four
Nigerian soldiers were wounded in
action while the nearby 22 Brigade has been contacted to send air ambulance to evacuate a soldier who was seriously injured.

Weapons recovered include “two AK47 rifles, four FN rifles, one M21 rifle, 110 X 7.62MM NATO ammunition, 20 X 7.62MM special,, 40 X M21 rounds, 4 X FN extra magazine and two locally made explosives.”

Naira ends 2016 low, rated one of the worst global currencies


The Naira is one of the world’s four worst performing currencies in 2016, Bloomberg LP reports.

According to the report, the Naira wassaid to have lost 36.68% of its spot returns for the year.

The Nigerian equity market fared worst in the year, as the nation’s economy is set to contract in 2016 for the first time in more than 20 years.

This is because the capital controls deter foreigners from investing coupled with militants are blowing up pipelines, amongst other challenges.

NAIJ.com's check today, December 30, has shown that the local currency stayed unchanged at the parallel market, as it still trades at N490/$1, one day to 2017.

The Naira also stayed low at N590 per pound and N502 per Euro at the
parallel market.

Fulani, Igbos clash in Enugu over N100


A mosque was burnt in Enugu following an inter-ethnic clash at a market.

A Fulani and an Igbo were killed in the fracas.

Anti-riot policemen were deployed to the scene.

An inter-ethnic clash in Gariki Market in Enugu state has resulted in the death of two people which also resulted in the burning of a mosque.
Naij.com earlier reported about the
fracas which occoured on Thursday,
December 29 was also confirmed by the police public relations of officer of the command Ebere Amaraizu.
Vanguard reports that the duo who died was one Ali, a Fulani man and Ifeanyi Ifeacho who is an Igbo man.

An eyewitness said Ali came from New Artisan market with a cow to slaughter in Gariki abattoir following the closure of New Artisan market by the Enugu State government earlier in the week.

There he asked Ifeanyi who worked as an attendant to slaughter the cow and subsequently paid N400 instead of the N500 that was charged in the market.
It was reported that Ifeanyi had asked for the rest of the money but the Fulani man refused and it degenerated into a heated fight.

Ali subsequently pulled out a dagger
and stabbed the Igbo man repeatedly until he slumped and died.
Ali reportedly tried to flee but was
intercepted by traders who beat him to death. Later angry Igbo people
regrouped and set fire to mosque inside Gariki Market.

The police spokesperson said: “Two
persons were confirmed dead yesterday in the course of a clash between an easterner and a northerner over an alleged misunderstanding that arose between them at Gariki Awkunanaw
market.”

Normalcy was returned to the market following the deployment of anti-riot police.
